Two-Hour Guided Hike in the Lož Valley
Guided by: Paul Veenvliet, Licensed Guide and Biologist
At the Snežnik castle, in the Lož valley in Slovenia, there is a little known but delightfully made education trail. the park itself is beautiful, with lanes of old oak trees and green lawns, that seamlessly fit with the grand forest adjacent to it. Forest animals naturally come to this place, and often leave their footprints. This was the inspiration to construct an education trail that fits perfectly with the landscape.
In distance, this is just a short hike, but there is so much that I can tell, that my guided hike takes bout an hour. Learn how to recognise animal footprints, what animals sound like, but also what the animals all hear themselves. When we look carefully, we may discover birds, or the hairs that a deer left behind, like I did when I took these pictures (below).
This is an ideal hike to combine with brown bear watching or with a guided visit to the castle, or why not with both? And if you can’t get enough of this park, you can meet Countess Greta as well. See “links“ for all these options.

Sharing Nature with Bears
Brown bears are making a comeback in Slovenia: from a low of about 600 in the last years of the previous century to well over 1000 at the moment of writing. In response to the population growth, bears also disperse into areas where they were not seen for decades and even centuries. For many nature-loving tourists, the prospect to share the area with bears is an exciting and positive one; some of my guests specially choose to come to Slovenia because of the bears. At the same time, brown bears are large and strong animals and confrontations are not without risks. During this hike, I will tell (and hopefully show) how to recognise the tracks and traces that bears leave in the landscape, as well as what to do, and what not to do, when you see a bear.
