Butterfly Excursions in Slovenia
Guided by: Paul Veenvliet, Licensed Guide and Biologist
With 184 species of day-butterflies Slovenia is truly a prime destination for butterfly tours! In the hight of the season, generally May to mid-June, we should be able to see 30 or more species in a single day. After that, the lowland meadows are mown and numbers drop dramatically. I then shift my focus to higher altitude habitats and forest edges in the dry karst.
In summer, the general diversity of insects becomes even higher, when numerous grasshoppers and bush-crickets mature. these include rare species that are hard to find elsewhere. As a consequence, my butterfly excursions tend to become more generalized insect-excursions later in the season, but this makes them not any less worthwhile.
The pace at butterfly and insect excursions tends to be slow, and the focus is often on macro photography, but this depends on your wishes. Sometimes we go in search of specific species, like the rare and highly seasonal poplar admiral or the endangered large copper. And don’t forget that the best butterfly areas are also botanical highlights!
Pricing:
Customized tours are competitively priced between €120 and €250, depending on the number of participants and destinations. This pricing structure accounts for fuel costs related to transportation and it often includes me visiting and evaluating the chosen areas a few days prior to your excursion.
