Botanical Tours in Slovenia

Guided by: Paul Veenvliet, Licensed Guide and Biologist

In Slovenia, the major central European bio-geographical zones collide. The landscape is often rugged, with large altitude differences. The sub-Mediterranean coast is within driving distance from high mountain peaks. Human activity, in the form of cenuries-long extensive farming, has enriched the landscape even further. the result is a stunningly rich flora wit never-ending surprises during any nature-excursion!

That said, most plants have restricted flowering seasons and what we can see depends on when you are here. Some examples are:

  • Early spring flowers: With a peak in  the last week of March and the first week of April, many thousands of crocusses, snowdrops and  grape hyacinths flower. You are not too late for hellebore’s and in the highly localized frittilaries and daffodils just start to flower. These are well known as garden plants; here in Slovenia they grow in the wild!

  • Wild orchids: The first orchids start to flower in April, but the eight of the season is May to early June. European wild orchid species tend to be small plants that grow in meadows and sometimes in on the forest floor. However,  they are no less beautiful than their tropical houseplant relatives. As a group they are an indication of healthy soil that has not been fertilized: these are the places where you can expect many other rare plants we well!

  • Forest vegetation: I just love the Slovenian forest, but maybe it goes a bit far to make a separate botanical excursion to the forests. For this, I already have my general excursion to the Snežnik forest 🙂
