Itinerary:
- Meet and Greet (9:00 AM): Gather at the designated meeting point, where Paul will introduce himself and provide an overview of the day’s itinerary, including insights into the region’s natural history and wildlife.
- Drive to Lake Cerknica: Enjoy a scenic drive to one of the less-visited parts of Lake Cerknica, taking in the beautiful landscapes along the way.
Guided Hike (9:30 AM – 12:00 PM):
- Hike Begins: Set off on a 2-3 hour guided hike along the forest edge surrounding Lake Cerknica. The trail is relatively easy and suitable for all fitness levels, making it an enjoyable experience for everyone.
- Discover the Unique Ecosystem: Learn about the lake’s fascinating characteristics, including its fluctuating water levels and its transformation from a full lake to a dry basin. Paul will share the science behind this phenomenon and how it creates a rich habitat for diverse animal and plant species.
- Explore Karstic Springs: Visit one of the least-known areas of the lake, where the main karstic springs are located. Experience first-hand the surprises of nature as the appearance of the lake varies with the water level, revealing hidden wonders.
- Wildlife Observation: Keep your eyes peeled for various species that make this dynamic environment their home. You may spot birds, amphibians, and the unique flora that thrives in this area. Lunch Break (12:00 PM):
